::NOUVEAU BATEAU ROOTS::
Tuesday, March 25, 2008
> I needed a quick little break from my boat so last week I took a 4-day trip to New Hampshire and joined my good friend Graham Cobb for some skinny ski action! We had a wicked time, it was awesome to get back on my cross-country skis after a few months of just kayak paddling. It was probably the last time I'll get more than 48 hours out of my skinny boat between now and the big O-show in August. Good thing I like my skinny boat! More on my boat shortly...So that's Mt. Washington in the background up there, and I would be remiss if I didn't thank the rad little squirrel who took the photo and ran next to me reminding to shift my weight properly and keep my poles straight and everything. New Hampshire squirrels have their ski technique nailed, it's really impressive. Here I am skiing in front of a famous place called the Mount Washington Hotel in Bretton Woods. It's where the Bretton Woods system was developed in 1944 (thanks Morty). 730 delegates from the 44 allied nations gathered here during WWII to develop a unified international monetary policy which ensures that each country maintains the exchange rate of its currency within a fixed value in terms of gold. I bet they had a ripper of a party afterwards too, cause all those meetings must have gotten boring, and it's a really sweet hotel. . . My Canoe Compadre roomates and I went to the Raps game down here in Orlando last week. We had a blast even though the Raps lost; and although the final score may not reflect it, the Raptors (minus Bosh) did put up quite a good fight, put on a good show and stayed close in points until the last five minutes. Apparently whoever has the most at the END of the game wins, and that is what playing basketball is all about, they call it "Gettin' the W". Kayaking is similar, whoever gets to the finish line first wins in kayak races. The main difference is that we don't wear cool shoes, which is the main reason why we don't get crazy million dollar contracts.Calderon is still my favourite basketball player. Please click on archives for my main arguments, they all still apply. If Canada hasn't got a team in Beijing, I will be cheering for Spain in the Basketball game competitions. I hope that is ok with everyone? . So my good friend and the "voice of TSN" Rod Black was as at the game (sans moustache), and he invited me to do a little interview on television... and somehow, that ended up on youtube. My sick blogger skills won't let me post the video straight up on here, but have a click and watch me and Rod kickin' it fresh (what's that mean?) at Amway Arena. .
. ![]() I've been checking out CBC's Olympic website entitled "Beijing Bound" quite a bit lately. It's got some great videos, complete with Ron "thumbs up" MacLean as always... Can't miss an opportunity to give my fellow Oakvillian a shout-out. But! Hey Ron, Angus Mortimer is from Ottawa... not Oakville, but we'll take him if their tradin'... (Check the Shun-yi Rowing/Canoe Kayak video) Did you take a boat out for a paddle Ron? CBC's feature on my trip to Liberia is up there as well, but it's a little tough to get to, here is my best attempt at cyber-directions for the adventurous and web-savvy: Click on "Watch Now - Adam van Koeverden, Chasing Gold" (There is a picture of me in my kayak on the main page, but this link should take you right there)... A video box will pop-up. Now click on "Beijing Olympics", then click "Countdown to Beijing", a lot of great videos are available, but the one with my name on it is the one about my trip to Liberia with Right to Play. Huge thanks to CBC for putting that together, and for lending me the camera which I used to get all the footage. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. .
